If you are an aspiring cricketer with dreams of double centuries and ten wicket hawls, you will need to do a lot of practising and invest in some quality cricket equipment
The summer is here and lush fields on Saturday afternoons echo with the unmistakable sound of leather on willow, as 22 men in whites battle it out for glorious victory. Cricket is a gentlemanly pursuit but also one which is highly competitive and to be a good player it takes a lot of practice. Whether you aspire to be a batsman, a bowler or an all-rounder it can take years to learn the skills necessary to be a great player. The gear you use is also important, so to play your best and for your safety it really pays to get some quality cricket equipment.
The Importance of Quality Cricket Equipment for your Safety
If you’ve ever come across a cricket ball you will realise it is rather hard. If you have ever been hit by one you will know that it is hard and that it can really do some damage. This is particularly true when a fast bowler is hurtling deliveries down at you at great pace – the top fast bowlers can reach 100pmh plus! In local cricket you will be unlikely to face someone quite that quick but there are some nippy bowlers around who could do you some damage if you don’t have the appropriate cricket equipment. You will need a good set of pads to protect your legs, a thigh pad and perhaps an inner thigh pad and very importantly a box – any man would be very foolish to bat without one of these. You will also need a tough pair of batting gloves to protect your vulnerable fingers from the 5.5 ounces of leather and cork that will come flying down at you from the bowler. Some batsmen opt to wear an arm guard and some go for a chest guard as well, if facing particularly swift bowlers. Helmets are worn by most batters nowadays and the wearing of them is enforced for batsmen under 18. The amount of kit may seem excessive but it’s better to wear it than suffer a broken bone.
Up your Game with Quality Cricket Equipment
As well as protecting you, cricket equipment should help you make the most of your talent and make it easier for you to play the game. For instance, there are now some really lightweight pads available that make it much easier to run than in the pads that were being made ten, or even five years ago. As a batsman, though, the most important piece of cricket equipment is your bat. It should have an easy pick-up and a nice balance to it which will help you swing cleanly through the line of the ball. The other thing it needs is a sweet middle so when you do hit the ball, it stays hit.
